YouTube Music has no scannable format of its own, so a QR code is how you get someone from something printed into a track, album or playlist. It opens with any phone camera, and it works whether or not the person has the app installed.

music.youtube.com or youtube.com — this is the whole trick

These are two different products sharing a name, and the link you copy decides which one opens.

• music.youtube.com/watch?v=… opens the YouTube Music app, with the player, the queue and the up-next list.
• youtube.com/watch?v=… opens the regular YouTube app, as a video, with comments and recommendations underneath.

Copy a link from a browser while you happen to be on youtube.com and you get the video version, even if the thing you are linking to is a song. If your code is meant to start music, check that the link you paste begins with music.youtube.com. Copying from inside the YouTube Music app always gives you the right one.

How to make a YouTube Music QR code

• Copy the link — in YouTube Music: open the song, album or playlist → the three dots → Share → Copy link.
• Check the domain — it should start music.youtube.com. If it says youtube.com, you copied from the video app.
• Paste it above — the QR code appears immediately.
• Download — PNG for screens, SVG for print.

Playlists need to be public or unlisted

A new YouTube Music playlist is private by default, and a code for a private playlist opens for you and nobody else. Open the playlist → three dots → Edit → set Privacy to Public (anyone can find it) or Unlisted (only people with the link, which is exactly what a QR code gives them).

Unlisted is the better choice for a wedding, a party or a shop — the playlist stays out of search but anyone who scans gets straight in. Test the finished code from a phone signed out of your account.

• Artists on a budget — YouTube Music reaches listeners who never pay for streaming, because the free tier is genuinely usable.
• Creators cross-promoting — a code on an end screen or in a description sending video viewers to the music side.
• Events and venues — an unlisted playlist behind a code on a table card or by the till.
• Merch and print — stickers, flyers, inserts. Keep the code at least 6 cm wide on fabric and print it somewhere flat.
• Gyms and studios — the class playlist on the wall, free for members to play at home.

Getting a code that scans every time

• Keep the contrast strong. Dark code, light background.
• Avoid gloss over the code — glare under bright lighting defeats the scan.
• Use SVG for print so it stays sharp at any size.
• Leave clear space around it; never lay text across it.
• Test the printed proof at final size before a full run.
